Bank House, King's Staithe Square

Tucked on King's Staithe Square, overlooking the Purfleet, Bank House is one of Lynn's quietest architectural stars. The Georgian townhouse was built in the early 18th century for one of the town's wealthiest merchants — back when Lynn was, in Bank House's own words, “a major medieval and Georgian trading port, second only to London and Liverpool.” It's Grade II* listed, and the architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner rated it one of the finest houses in King's Lynn, full stop.

These days it's a hotel, bar and restaurant, and it still knows how to do a good welcome — Sunday roast is £19.50, and if you're reading this on a Thursday, know that Bank House runs 2-for-1 cocktails all day, every day. Worth remembering next time you're planning an evening on the Quay.

Next time you walk past King's Staithe Square, look up. There's more history above the awnings than most of us ever notice.

Catch it before it's gone

King's Lynn Festival's Final Week

The 75th King's Lynn Festival is in its last week — and if you haven't been yet, this is the week to go. The free TASTE exhibition runs right through to 25 July, so there's still time to drop in. On the concert side, it's a properly starry finish: tonight, baritone Roderick Williams and pianist Iain Burnside trace a line from the Forest of Dean to the Appalachians, Friday's programme includes an evening of Dowland songs, and the Festival closes in style on Saturday with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Daily coffee concerts have been running all week too, if you fancy something shorter over a morning break.

Seventy-five years of bringing world-class music and art to Lynn is worth marking — even if it's just a lunchtime look at TASTE before the doors close for another year.

🌈 The Walks and Tower Gardens fly the Green Flag again.
