Bank House, King's Staithe Square

Tucked on King's Staithe Square, overlooking the Purfleet, Bank House is one of Lynn's quietest architectural stars. The Georgian townhouse was built in the early 18th century for one of the town's wealthiest merchants — back when Lynn was, in Bank House's own words, “a major medieval and Georgian trading port, second only to London and Liverpool.” It's Grade II* listed, and the architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner rated it one of the finest houses in King's Lynn, full stop.

These days it's a hotel, bar and restaurant, and it still knows how to do a good welcome — Sunday roast is £19.50, and Bank House runs 2-for-1 cocktails all day, every Thursday. Worth remembering next time you're planning an evening on the Quay.
